For a second year, the members of Roots – Calgary Truth Baptist Church will be bringing a team of ten volunteers from Calgary, Alberta to carry out God’s Word amongst refugees in Athens, Greece. God said for us to “remember the poor” and “to care for the orphans, the widows, and the strangers.” The refugees are not only the orphans, the widows, the poor, and the strangers, but they are also the homeless, the distraught and the suffering.

In order to love, to care for, and to serve refugees residing in Athens, Roots will be partnering with Canadian Global Response. This project will last approximately a week and we will listen to the refugee’s stories, understand their pain, and rejoice in their victories. We will cook for them, spend time with them and offer them basic necessities. To do so, our team is asking for $3000 to help supplement this trip to spread love with all the lives we will come across.

These refugees are mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters escaping brutal wars in Syria that has lasted over six, long, and painful years. Over 4.6 million Syrians have fled the broken country and 6.6 million are internally displaced within Syria (The European Union, 2016). This has created the single largest refugee crisis since the Second World War. Greece being one of the closest European Union countries to Syria has seen the most drastic number of refugees. About 1 million of these refugees arrive in Athens across the Mediterranean Sea on nothing but an inflatable raft.

This trek is not only dangerous but highly lethal claiming the lives of 1 in 269 (UNHCR, 2016). Those who survive the journey start another impossible part of their lives. Most of these individuals including doctors, lawyers, scientists, and teachers are unable to work and live in crowded camps or squat houses. The children receive no formal education. Many times, families are broken. The refugees live in unimaginable conditions, but nonetheless, they persevere.

Roots – Calgary Truth Baptist Church wants to help the refugees and to show them love. Will you join us on this incredible journey to spread love to the poor, the broken, and the suffering? Donations of any amount is greatly appreciated.

From Roots, we thank you for your contributions and help! God bless!
